Benefits of Sea Moss Soap for Skin

Before we dive too deep into the details of sea moss skincare, we want to give a brief overview of Irish Sea Moss and its role in history.

The sea moss we’re referring to is also sometimes called “Irish Moss” or “Chondrus crispus.” It’s an edible, safe type of algae that grows in tidepools along the coasts of North America and Europe. It can appear in a range of colors, from yellowish greens to dark purples and blacks.

People first began ingesting Irish Sea Moss as far back as the 1840s in Ireland. During times of famine, people realized that this moss contained a seriously high level of important nutrients, including:

  • Vitamin B2, B9, and B12
  • Vitamin C
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Zinc
  • Iodine

Even just one teaspoon of sea moss holds up to 90 percent of the nutrients our bodies need to thrive. That’s why so many refer to this as a “super” ingredient. Even WebMD heralds its benefits for the immune system, brain, and of course, skin.

Now, hundreds of years later, people are still ingesting and using sea moss to benefit their health. There’s been a big shift toward incorporating algae in skincare, and we’ll explain why.

To understand how Irish Sea Moss can change your skin for the better, we need to take a look at the many nutrients and minerals it contains.

Vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K are all important parts of a strong skincare routine. Additionally, iron, magnesium, and calcium all play a big role in keeping your skin youthful and clear. Over time, skincare experts have found that sea moss:

  • Decreases inflammation in the skin.
  • Hydrates skin and gives it a natural glow.
  • Heals damaged/irritated skin.
  • Prevents breakouts.

Sea moss can actually help your skin produce collagen and keratin, too. This helps strengthen your skin and gives it the elasticity it needs to prevent wrinkles and look smooth, improving hyperpigmentation, toned, supple and healthy.

Additionally, research has indicated that sea moss’s omega-3 fatty acids can make up for what our diets are lacking. This acid soothes damaged skin and inflammation, resulting in less redness and discomfort.

We often recommend eating Sea Moss to people who are:

  • Dealing with summer/seasonal acne.
  • Unhappy with their skin’s “glow.”
  • Developing wrinkles prematurely.
  • Living in environments that are harsh on their skin.

Because Irish Sea Moss is rich in sulfur, it actually contains antibacterial properties that foster a healthy skin microbiome. If you live in a big city or a place with many pollutants, or if your skin is especially prone to breakouts, sea moss might be the tool to managing your acne, bacne, and butt acne.
