Why We Don’t Use Coconut Oil — And What We Use Instead

Coconut oil is everywhere in skincare—but at TERRA-TORY, we choose not to use it in our products. Why? Because while coconut oil works for some, many of our customers find it too drying, comedogenic, or irritating—especially those with dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone skin.

Coconut Oil Isn’t for Everyone

Though coconut oil has antibacterial properties and a light texture, it can clog pores and cause breakouts for many skin types. It's also high in lauric acid, which can be overly stripping for already dry skin, making things worse over time—not better.

We’ve heard from too many customers who thought something was wrong with their skin… until they removed coconut oil from their routine.

Why We Choose Shea Butter Instead

We center our skincare around raw, unrefined shea butter—a rich, creamy, deeply moisturizing plant butter packed with vitamins A and E. Unlike coconut oil, shea butter supports the skin barrier without clogging pores or causing flakiness.

Our whipped body butters combine shea butter with healing oils like hempseed, avocado, and rice bran to create a skin-loving blend that nourishes without irritation.

Our Soaps Are Coconut-Free Too

Even many “gentle” bar soaps rely on coconut oil for lather. But at TERRA-TORY, we handcraft our soaps to cleanse without compromising moisture. Our bars use moisturizing oils and botanicals that gently clean while keeping your skin soft—not tight or squeaky.

Skincare Shouldn’t Work Against You

We believe skincare should be clean, effective, and uncompromising. That means no coconut oil, no palm oil, and no fillers—just real ingredients that work for real skin. Your body deserves better than trends. It deserves care.
